Create a magazine for All The Things, a Sacramento-based magazine company. The goal of the magazine is to create a system that can be used across 3-4 articles, each with its own unique topic. Each article is solely based in Sacramento and the greater Sacramento area.
a 16-week magazine development that consisted of picking 3-4 different articles, researching, which involved a creative brief as well as a competitive audit, thumbnailing, gathering photos, concepting, and finally developing and executing the deliverable.
Where the River Meets the Cage Spread (MMA)
Concrete Roots Spread (SkateBoarding)
Beneath the GlassSpread (Fresh Water Aquarium)
The main inspiration for the articles was potential hobbies, with a focus on the diverse cultures and communities that engage in these activities. For each article, I created 3 symbols in 3 different colors to establish a system while still preserving the unique experience of each activity. For the Mixed Martial Arts article, I chose a red X with varying sizes and quantities. This creates a Point, Line, Plain system. This system is created by using a single object once (point), then using that object in a line (line), and finally placing objects in a grid to create a plane. The reason for the X is that when brought together in a plan, it then creates the grid of the cage where fights or training take place. I chose red because of the passion and obsession people who experience the sport have. When creating the second article symbol and color, the topic was skateboarding, and I focused on green and an arrow-like shape. I also used point, line, plane again to create more visual interest, but when the arrows are lined up, they resemble arrows one might see when walking or driving through an urban environment. Using the green not only relates to nature, but it also relates to growth through the sport, when someone spends months or years trying to land a trick, they grow in that experience. Finally, the last article focused on creating freshwater aquariums. Creating the color and systems is self-explanatory. Light blue represents the ocean or water, and the small organic line creates waves; when combined in a point, line, plane system, it forms a sequence of waves, like traveling through the ocean.
